Victoria Golf Club, Kandy

Sri Lanka is not renowned as a golfing destination, but this is slowly changing, such is the reputation being forged by the Victoria Golf Club. It lies next to Kandy’s Victoria Reservoir with beautiful views in all directions. Opened in 1999, it was voted the ‘Best Course on the Sub Continent’ by the readers of Asian Golf Monthly in early 2005. And all for a cost of just US$600,000 to build all 18 holes.

The creation of the course was a real experience with the wonderful local people employed to do the work which, on other projects, would be carried out by machinery. The results are as good, if not better, as could have been achieved by mechanical means and are remarkable bearing in mind that the majority of the workers did not even know that the game existed before construction started.

The finished layout illustrates how well golf can be blended into a landscape, helped by the fact that there was a need for only 12 bunkers, such are the natural challenges provided by the terrain. The elegant clubhouse is also a lesson in how to produce a great result for such a reasonable outlay.
