Woking
Surrey, England
A long with many of the Surrey Clubs, Woking has been undergoing a programme of heathland restoration over recent years. This has involved the clearance of a lot of trees and stripping of areas so that the heather seed in the ground and new seed applied can take hold. The results have been very successful so far.
The refurbishment of bunkers led to the question of whether they should be restored to a classic heathland style. Over the years heathland bunkers have tended to lose their rugged shapes and heather vegetation as they have been reconstructed. It is quite a challenge to reinstate the look which was created by the original course architects.
A visit was made to the nearby Queenwood course to gain inspiration as their new, heathy bunkers are a great example of what can be achieved from scratch. The bunkers on the 3rd, 7th and 8th holes at Woking were the first to receive the treatment and have been very well received. The programme has continued for other bunkers.
