W hen a change of ownership took place at
Skibo Castle, it soon became clear that the course was going to receive considerable
investment.
Having been closely involved with the original
design back in 1992 and having played the course on many occasions since, it was an unusual exercise to carry out a critique of the course. Considerable opportunities for
improvement were available, because the original planning negotiations were restrictive.
The project is ongoing and so far has included significant re-routing of the 12th, 13th and 14th holes, major reshaping of the 2nd and 7th holes, nine new tees, major re-bunkering on many holes and a new green on the 10th. This creates a long par four heading in an easterly direction, something which the original design lacked.
The Club has hosted the Northern Open in recent years, establishing itself as a highly popular venue.
