Luttrellstown Castle
Dublin, Ireland
Luttrellstown Castle in Dublin is an example of what can be achieved by reconstruction. Already an established Dublin golf venue, it was felt that the course did not meet its potential and so it was expanded and completely rebuilt to put it in the top bracket of inland Irish golf.
The course is set in parkland, so revetted bunkers were used to keep the sand out of view to the greatest possible degree and to give the course a distinctive character that would set it apart from the inland competition.
Interesting greens are at the heart of the design as creative contouring shapes how the rest of the hole should be played. They vary in difficulty from the roller-coaster 2nd and 15th greens, where short approach shots are required to the more mellow 17th green where long irons and woods are used.
In 2006, J. P. McManus and John Magnier, who were largely responsible for Sandy Lane, purchased the whole estate from Primwest, which also developed the course at Primland in Viginia.
