It is hoped that the tremendously exciting project at CostaTerra, to the south of Lisbon in Portugal, will finally receive planning approval in 2009 after well over 10 years of negotiations despite generous Government support! The layout for the course was developed by Donald Steel & Company but Mackenzie & Ebert has completed the detailed design and construction should start in 2010.
The site is very close to some beautiful beaches and is made up of the second highest dunes in Europe and hence is all sand. This offers a tremendous potential for the creation of a true links course but the other marvellous discovery is that heather is recolonising the former pine tree plantation. As a result the
philosophy is to attempt to create a course which has a links / heathland character.
The development will be very stylish with houses built by old Portuguese methods to
produce a classical rather than contemporary appearance.
